Oncotype eligibility

Hello,  I was diagnosed with grade 3 IDC with a separate large 9cm section of DCIS in April.  I had a right mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction 1 month ago.  I met with my consultant last Wednesday and she said I'm not eligible for the oncotype test as my invasive tumour is 1.8cm. As grade 3 and the tumour doubli g in size since it was first diagnosed,  I thought I would be eligible for the oncotype test?  But apparently not.  My pathology results were not back in time to be discussed at the mdt meeting last week,  but they will be discussing me tomorrow and my consultant from loomi g at the results told me last week she thinks I won't need further treatment other than hormone treatment for 10 years.  I'm 41.  Does this all sound right to you?  Thanks so much,  Kate

  • Hello KLS1981 and thanks for posting,

NICE (he National Institute for Clinicals Excellence) is involved in developing guidance for the NHS when new technologies and diagnostic tests come onto the scene.

NICE last looked at the Oncotype test in 2018 and approved it in certain situations, but it wasn't recommended for everyone with early breast cancer.  It is approved for people whose risk of cancer returning is intermediate which is calculated by using online tools (usually one called PREDICT) based on features of the cancer. Perhaps this is why your oncologist referred to your tumour size as this is one of the features used in PREDICT.

You can read the information for the public about NICE's appraisal at this link

I hope you hear back soon about the outcome of the MDT review and have the chance to talk everything over with your specialist team.

Give us a ring if you want to chat with us, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,
