First smear test

Hi,

I just had my first smear test and it was a disaster. I have had a speculum inserted before due to issues with my pill and both times doctors tried to see my cervix it was a failure as I was in so much pain.

I got my letter reminder 2 months ago and built up the courage to get my first smear booked. I've read forums, did research and everything to help me prepare and ease my worries. On the day, the nurse tried 3 times and it was a failure. I was in so much agony and cried. I don't know what else to do. I'm booked in again next week with some prescription pain killers so hoping this will help. If this all fails I don't know what to do. If I have to be knocked out I will as I know how important it is to be done but I just don't see any other option. I did have to ask multiple times about other options as it's obvious doing a normal smear will not work. Any advice on what to do if next week is a disaster?

I'm now dreading next week.

  • Ask your GP / nurse whether or not you can have gas and air.  I have similar problems to you and it makes a huge difference to use gas and air.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your experience of having a smear test. It is good to know that you will be going back to have it done again. It sounds like the nurse that is going to do it is looking at ways to make this a more comfortable, less worrying experience for you. Hopefully this second attempt will mean you can have it done.

General anaesthetic (getting knocked out) is not used in the cervical screening programme. If you do find out that you need to come back you could ask about having sedation, perhaps with a tablet before you have it done.  I am not sure if this would be possible but you could ask, if you need to.

Jo's Trust is another UK charity that provides information about the cervical screening programme, some of their screening tips about it might help you, so please do look here .

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi,

I tried with the diazepam today and again, it was agonising. I have now been referred to the gynaecologist. I'm now scared that won't work. For my first smear, it has really put me off and I'm dreading the next one.
