Bone Cancer investigation

Does a normal blood test automatically rule out bone cancer?  My mum (85 yrs old) has been in excruciating pain in her right hip for 3 weeks, she's lost 10LB but is eating well.  She's had 3 Melanoma's in the right leg in recent years.  Morphine doesn't touch the pain at it's worst which is at night.  She's had a normal bllood result and hospital is trying to tell us it's sciatica.  Doesn't seem right. ....

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. It is really only your doctors who can make this assessment. Metastatic bone cancer (cancer that has spread to the bone from another site) can cause a raised calcium. It can sometimes also affect how the bone marrow works. The bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These can be affected if the cancer had spread to the bones.

The doctors would be looking at all these different blood tests in making their assessment. I am not sure whether they also considered doing a bone scan. If her blood count did not show any significant changes they may not think this is necessary.

I do hope that she manages to get some relief from the pain. Do talk to the doctors whether there are other drugs that she could have to help provide some relief.

We have some information on different types of pain relief which you may find helpful to look at here

If you feel that you would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then do give us a ring. We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

    Catherine
