Sore throat for over 4 weeks

Hi,

Please help. I've had a sore throat for over 4 weeks now. It started after a night out celebrating and I did smoke cigarettes that night. ( I don't usually smoke unless an occasion which is probably once a month) the sore throat started off as a sort of sharp pain on  the left side and felt like it was radiating around the tonsil area or just behind at the back of the throat behind it. The pain sometimes moves around the back of the throat and becomes a sore raw pain. I've done the usual of taking lozenges, throat sprays, mouth washes, gargling salt water, honey and warm water and not shouting as much. This has made little difference. It doesn't hurt when I swallow. Just when I do a certain motion with my throat like a cough so when I go to move my throat muscles and the throat constricts.  It makes that left handed pain. I seen the nurse practioner in week 3 who said tonsils were fine Andy throat looked healthy. Lympthnodes weren't swollen and prescribed omperzole for slient reflux. On day 9 of taken them and no difference at all. Went to see the doctor yesterday and he said the same. My throat looked fine just left lympthnode was slightly bigger and there was a tiny bit of inflammation on it. Prescribed nasal steroid spray for it. He things some sort of scrap in my throat has done this. I'm just not convinced. I've never had a sore throat for this long with no other symptoms and no medicine is helping with the pain or making it better.  When I goggle everything, all that ever comes up is throat cancer so I'm very worried. I just want it to go away :( I can't be referred to ENT until 6 weeks so I have to wait another 2 weeks before I even get refereed . Any one had similar or can suggest Any other remedies that may help?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you still have a sore throat and while I can appreciate your worry please remember that you have had your throat checked out, if there was a concern you could have cancer you would have been told.

It looks like you are going to be referred to the ENT team so in the meantime follow the advice of your GP and carry on with any medication you were told to take. This will give you more time to see if this does get better.

When looking online remember that the symptoms of cancer are also the same symptoms that are more likely to explain non-cancerous conditions. So try not to presume that you have cancer.

I can see this is a worry for you so I hope you have support from family and friends.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
