Breast lump not found on ultrasound

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has been in the same situation as me.

I found a breast lump about 1 month ago, it's slightly smaller than a golf ball but not completely round, it sticks out so you can visibly see it without having to point it out (I do have small breasts though).

The GP said she was a bit concerned when she felt it (pre period) so I went for an ultrasound today, I'm due on my period today so my boobs are really swollen and hard above where the lump is so the lump isn't detectable by hands right now. The person who examined me before the ultrasound said they were very dense due to my period and they would most likely biopsy it to get to the lump. The ultrasound technician just ran over the area and said all she could see were three 5mm cysts, this lump is a lot bigger than 5mm and also not in the area she said she found the cysts. Part of me thinks they know what they're doing, maybe it's nothing but I know as soon as my boobs reduce in swelling again in a few days it will be sticking out like a golf ball again. Does anyone have any suggestions on whether I should leave it or ask for a second opinion? Are you able to request a mammogram or something?

Thank you!

  • Hello el1992 and thanks for posting,

As a general rule in younger women ultrasounds are the best way to get an image of the breast so I am not sure if a mammogram would add to the picture and I can only assume the staff at the Breast Clinic would have arranged one if they thought it was needed. Even so, there is no harm in talking this over with your GP or perhaps you could talk to someone at the Breast Clinic and get them to explain the outcome of your assessment more clearly.  I think you need to get some peace of mind about this lump and it doesn't sound as if you have been reassured, so do try and get some more input from either your GP or the clinic. I hope they can help.

Give us a call if you want to talk anything over, our number is 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,
