My Mom has had an inoperable tumour for over 18 months. Radio and chemo hasn't worked. She's currently having more chemo. I don't understand what inoperable means, why can't they take it out?

only your mom's doctors can say exactly what inoperable means in your mom's case
sometimes a tumour is wrapped around an organ or has grown into it in such a way it can't be removed without harming a patient or the doctors can't get at a tumour for some reason
sometimes co-morbidities – other conditions that a patient has – may make surgery unsafe
just realised your question for the nurses - sorry!
don't worry they will provide an answer still
please excuse me
Thank you for your reply, that makes much more sense. I don't like go ogling such things as I get upset :(
it's hard when a loved one has cancer and feeling upset is natural
staying off google a good idea
if you feel you need a little bit of support to help deal with your emotions there is a charity called Maggies which you can call or they have drop in centres around the country
also feel free to have a rant on this site any time
a lot of people feel it helps to let out the frustration that can be felt when treatments perhaps aren't working quite as well as hoped
sending a virtual hug x
Hello and thanks for posting,
I see that you have had a response from another forum member. Unfortunately, it is usually because the cancer is near other vital organs or an artery.
Also, if the person has other health issues, or just is not strong enough to undergo major surgery. Even with surgery, the outcome can vary, which is why other treatments, such as chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are often used.
Maybe you might get an opportunity to speak with the doctors more about this.
Best wishes,
Vanda
Thank you both,
I don't find it easy to talk to my Mom or family about it and I live too far away to be able to attend any hospital visits with her.
I believe this current chemo now is to try and prevent the cancer from spreading elsewhere, and they aren't expecting the tumour to shrink.
I haven't had a proper look around in here yet but I will do. It's just nice to be able to talk about it anonymously x
