Do GP’s review patients after 2ww?

I was recently on the 2ww referral after suffering symptoms (faecal incontinence, blood in stools and weight loss) but thankfully all went well and now I've been taken off. It turns out I just have haemorrhoids but still waiting for biopsy results so hopefully they'll be normal aswell.

I'm still finding my symptoms hard to live with but I don't know how long to give it before I contact my GP.

I remember I needed to give a stool sample a few weeks ago and I messaged asking for the result and a receptionist called and said that I had already been referred to the hospital so they'll review me after that.

I later got access to my test results on the nhs app and saw that my stool sample had a normal result so wasn't sure why they didn't answer my question.

    Receptionists on the whole don't give results over the phone.

    You may find it helpful to have a read about the useful information written by the NHS on haemorrhoids and how to treat them. Have a look here

    You could always speak to a pharmacist to get advice on the best cream to apply. Make sure that you are drinking enough fluid particularly in this hot weather that we are having. And take regular paracetamol as needed.

    If your symptoms don't get better after a week, then do make an appointment with your GP who may be able to prescribe different medication.

    You should then also have the results back on your biopsy.

    Thank you for the link and advice. I'll make sure to drink plenty of fluids and take regular paracetamol. I hope you are keeping well in this heat.

    Am I right in thinking that those creams are only for itchiness or swelling? because I don't have any of those. My only symptoms are passing blood, incontinence and weight loss for no reason.

    I still keep thinking it's something worse but I'm trying to think it's unlikely when I have had a sigmoidoscopy and they couldn't see any abnormalities. I have 2 family members who had bowel cancer. One of them also had haemorrhoids and he didn't like chasing his GP as they weren't as empathetic and he ended up have a late diagnosis and sadly he passed after a month. 

    I really hope I can stop being worried about this especially as I am only 23 and my family members were 35 and 75 when diagnosed.

    Hello Amelia and thank for getting back to us,

    There are a number of different over the counter (prescription not required) creams available to help with haemorrhoids/piles, they tend to be marketed as a means to treat the usual accompanying symptoms which can include itching and swelling. Local swelling can prevent the anal sphincter from closing tightly leading to a bit of faecal incontinence and I suppose bleeding might be worse with swelling so one or the other of these creams might be worth trying before you see the GP .

    Bowel cancer would be very unlikely at your age, but I think once your symptoms go away you will probably feel a lot more comfortable about things. I hope your GP can help and that things improve for you soon.
