Loose stools

I am 12 weeks after operation for bowel cancer

I have been very lucky that operation went well snd no further treatment but need 6 monthly bloods and yearly colonoscopy

It's been difficult times for lots other reasons but my recovery has been good- since operation my stool def looser but was told this is very normal so I had no concerns initially but in last two weeks my bowel movement is very loose and I'm now anxious that this could be symptom of cancer returning

I know I'm probably over thinking and only months ago have gone through many checks etc but I'm worrying- I feel well, eating fine, excercising well but now this worry is consuming me

  • Hi Hev60 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having these issues.

Your bowel habits might never return to how they were before your surgery but hopefully things will settle a bit more for you.

After treatment it can help to experiment with your diet to find out which causes more a problem with loose stools for you. Some people find keeping a food diary for a few weeks to see if certain fruits and vegetable make this symptom worse.  Making changes to your diet can help to slow bowel movements or make them more solid and your doctor might be able to prescribe medicines to help you open your bowels less frequently and keep your stools less loose.

You can read more about diet on Bowel Cancer UK's website by clicking here.

You may also find it useful to mention the symptoms to your doctor, they may be able to give you some advice on how to manage the problem or refer you to a specialist nurse for help and advice.

We have a page on your website about managing bowel problems here.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Rachel
