Biopsies

Hello, I had a sigmoidoscopy last week. They said my bowel prep was excellent which I was very pleased about as it was challenging.

I don't think they saw any abnormalities other than haemorrhoids which I am very relieved about.

They took 6 biopsies and I should receive the results within 3 weeks. I didn't actually notice that they took these. I am wondering what biopsies are and what the possible results could come from them?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

They will usually take biopsies as standard practice during a bowel scope procedure, to check any tissue samples taken, and send them off for laboratory analysis. The pathologist will look at the sample of cells taken, to see if there are various bowel conditions, or whether the tissue sample cells has abnormal or cancer cells present.

I hope that this helps, and that you get to find out more soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
