Subungual Melanoma query

I noticed what I thought was a bruise on my toe nail about 5 weeks ago. No know injury. In 5 weeks it has not changed or grown up the toenail which makes me think  its under the toenail. Someone told me to get it checked as sone skin cancers appear like that.

I sent a photo in to my Doctors today, the receptionist called me and said the Doctor has looked and said you need a face to face appointment to check it. I said fine can I book that now and she said yes I can pre-book you for 31st August. Now that I've read about this type of cancer, I'm not sure I should wait that long for the appointment. Or am I over reacting and another 3 weeks isn't going to make much difference?

  • Hi KSC1969 and thanks so much for posting.

It is always important to get these things checked.  Waiting for an appointment can be really hard, so try and distract yourself with your usual routine, and hobbies that you enjoy.

3 weeks can seem like a long time, but it is unlikely to make a difference to any treatment you might need.  If you notice any more changes in the meantime, such as pain or redness let your GP know.

It's important to say that there are many reasons why this may happen why you may get marks on your toenail, including toe trauma, fungal infections and possibly vitamin deficiencies. Subungual melanoma is actually a rare condition.

I hope this is helpful and if you would like any more information please get back in touch.  We have a helpline you can call on Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Rachel
