Breast cancer checks and timelines

Hi,

Posting again but still so anxious. I got a mammogram 26th of July and am provisionally booked to a follow up ultrasounds 18th August. I'm not concerned about any typical breast cancer symptoms eg no lump, dumpling, nipple inversions etc but i have an ache in my breast and shoulder and collar bone. I've been given very little info on why I'm being called back but they need to take a better look with ultrasound. Am I right in thinking if they saw a lump or something more sinister I wouldn't be left 3 weeks before an ultrasound. I can feel every ache and pain and finding it difficult to sleep at night. I have 3 weeks left of maternity leave before I'm back to a stressful job and I feel like this whole experience is ruining the last few weeks with my baby.

  • Hello there

I appreciate how waiting and not knowing what may be causing symptoms is unsettling. I can see that this has been going on for a while now for you but lets hope you get some more answers soon.

Unfortunately no one here can say why you have been called back but it sounds like they want a closer look at an area that was unclear and they want to make sure nothing sinister is going on. I don't think you can read too much into the timings of this, so don't dwell on this too much.

Just to say breast pain on it's own isn't strongly linked to breast cancer and is often found to be the result of hormones or a muscle/ligament injury that you can read more about here. Equally shoulder and collar bone pain is commonly the result of repetitive movement injury, trauma or poor posture.

Try not to over think things if you can and enjoy the last days of your maternity leave. I hope everything works out okay for you.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
