Reasearch on getting HPV vaccination as an adult

Does anyone know of any peer reviewed reasearch on the effectiveness and risks of getting the HPV vaccine in later life? Just had my second colposcopy in 10 years. As a child I had terrible Verrucas and often warts. I just seem to be very susceptible to all types of HPV! The consultant at the hospital today mentioned there was some evidence that it may be worth it (although would need to do it privately) I wanted to do some reading before deciding but can't find much.

  • I got the HPV vaccine this year as an adult since I missed it when I was in school and forgot about it afterwards. My GP told me that it's only effective if you've never been sexually active.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

The HPV vaccine is most effective when it is given before someone is sexually active as they will not have been exposed to the high risk types of HPV.  However some people do want to have it after the age of 25, this will have to be done privately.

The HPV vaccine cannot get rid of HPV that you already have, but it does protect against other types of HPV. So, if you already have HPV, this means the vaccine could still benefit you as it may offer protection against HPV types you don’t have. The organisation Jo's Trust has explored getting the vaccine after the age of 25.You can see what they say at this link .

I hope this is of help.Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
