Throat cancer?

Background: 27, ex smoker/ social smoker. I had bad tonsillitis winter 2021 which inflamed my tonsils. Got it again towards the end of 2021.

Ever since then my tonsils have stayed enlarged and possibly gotten a little bigger. My gag reflex is too full on (this has been a thing for my entire life its not new) for doctors to get a good swab for an accurate test.

Had anyone had this experience before?

How do they test for throat cancer?

Firstly, have you approched your GP with your concerns?

There are many possibilities on the list of likely causes, all of them more likely than cancer. Your GP would look to narrow them down.

From my experience, if referred to an ENT consultant to test for tonsil cancer or throat cancer, they would most probably first perform a clinical examination - put an endoscope through your nose to examine your mouth & throat, feel around your jaw and neck to examine your lymph nodes. And then if they suspected anything, they might perform what I believe is called a needle biopsy - a pin *** where they remove a small amount of tissue for analysis.

If their suspicions were raised further, then they might perform an MRI scan or a CT scan.

Like I said, the chances are, if it is anything at all, it is something other than cancer.

    I wish you luck.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

If you are concerned about your enlarged tonsils then do go back and discuss this with your GP.

Your GP may consider referring you to an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctor if your symptoms don't appear to be clearing up.

The NHS have written some information about tonsillitis which you can read about here

Tonsil cancer is not common at your age. It is usually a cancer of much older people. If they did want to test for cancer then they would need to get a biopsy so that they could look at the cells under a microscope.

The Patient Association have information about how to get the most out of your appointment which you can see here

I do hope that your tonsillitis clears up soon but do make an appointment with your GP for advice.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
