Swelling above right collarbone

Hi all I am 56 years old and about a week ago I had right sided neck pain. A few days later I noticed swelling above the collar bone and slight tenderness below the collarbone on the same side and now I have mild shoulder pain.

I also have slight chest pain around the area which is sore and in the same spot as I was diagnosed with Costochondritis a few years ago.

I think I can feel a rubbery lump which is towards the end of the collarbone away  from the neck and my wife says she cannot feel anything but the whole area is swollen.

I had the same swollen area in 2016 and an ultrasound revealed slighty raised cervical lymph nodes but this seems worse.

The symptoms havent gotten any worse or better and I am going to make an appointment next week week with my GP and I must admit after reading Dr. Google, I am totally terrified.

I have no other symptoms I know of (weight loss, coughing etc) but my anxiety levels are high.

Should these Lymph nodes be easily palpable?

Thank You

  • Hello and thank you for your enquiry. I’m sorry you are worried about this.

Lymph nodes often come up and down in response to viral or bacterial infections, and they form part of our daily immune system.

Costochondritis can come and go in episodes. So these probably aren't related to each other.

Unfortunately, this forum isn't really meant for people with symptoms, as we would always advise that if you have concerns, to ask your GP to check this out for you. Most things are easily explained, and I'm sure that your GP will be able to reassure you. Try not to make assumptions from Googling symptoms, and go and see your GP.

    Kind regards,

    Vanda
