Scared I may have rectal cancer

I've been having tests to find out why I'm having mobility/pain which on my last MRI spine, I received a phone call after 48 hours to tell me to contact my GP urgently as they'd seen a thickening mass near my rectum.  Within 2 weeks I've got a ct colonoscopy and barium swallow and sigmoidoscopy all booked in starting next week.  I'm so scared as I have been having all the symptoms apart from weight loss but was told from a previous colonoscopy that I have diverticula disease and would bleed ect.  I also have a condition called dumping syndrome from a previous hiatal hernia surgery.

im petrified that I'm going to be told it's a later stage tumor.

im wondering how soon after my ct this next Thursday would I be told my results?

sorry for the long winded post.

it's constantly on my mind and was a shock being told something was there when they were checking my spine and hips for nerve damage

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Waiting for tests can be very unsettling and I can understand how this must be praying on your mind.

I am afraid I can't be very specific on how long before they give you the results of the CT colonoscopy, barium swallow and sigmoidoscopy.

You may find it more helpful to discuss this with the doctors and nurses at the hospital when you have these tests  about how long it may be before you get the results.

They may be waiting to discuss your case in an MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team ) meeting where the doctors involved in your care meet to discuss your case with the results of your different tests. These formal meetings usually happen once a week where each individual patient with suspected cancer is discussed.

Try if you can not to dwell on it too much if you possibly can.

I do hope that you know more soon.

If you feel that you would like to discuss any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to give us a ring. We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Very Best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your informative reply, much appreciated. I've had my scans now but now I'm awaiting my results.  Is it normal to be waiting 3 plus weeks.  I have been given the secretary's number but I'm too scared to ring.  If it was cancer, would they have told me by now?

my heads all over the place and my sleep is almost non existent.  I keep telling myself I'm fine because I've not lost weight.

  • Hello @dizzy96

Sorry to hear of your worries. Hope all will be ok.
what was the pain you had in your hips? I'm concerned over nerve damage . Or something with my back. I am awaiting an mri after 7 months of pain.

  • Hi and thank you.

they've found nerve damage, slight curving of my spine and my discs have arthritis in them, also bursitis and sciatica

That's a long time for you to be waiting for your MRI

I hope they get you sorted out soon

    take care x

  • Hello there and thanks for getting back

Urgent results are often back in 2 or 3 weeks but sometimes there are delays with results being reported and the doctor seeing them.

As worrying as it must be do give the secretary a call to find out what may be happening and when to expect to know more.

Times like this can be unsettling but try not to over think things until you have all the information.

I hope you know more soon

    Take care

    Naomi
