Can I opt for a prophylactic mastectomy when high risk?

Hi,

I am high risk BC and have had a few scares (biopsies) and constant checks. I have a neurological condition and the stress of the unknown is adding to my pain in general.
Can I opt to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction when I see my breast care nurse? I'm due in on the 16th to investigate more changes in my breast.

I have 4 markers in total fitted and they have become so uncomfortable and cause pain, I have intense pain when removing my bra, or lie on the side of the markers. I'm almost 40 now, so feel now would be the time.

Can anyone offer advice professional or personal experience please.

thank you

  • Hello Bex83 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about what has been going on.

Risk reducing mastectomy can be an option for some women whose risk of developing breast cancer is vey high, often due to having inherited a faulty breast cancer gene. But whatever the situation I think it is always ok to bring things up with the specialist team looking after you and ask them to explain your options and what they involve. So do ask about this on the 16th when you have your appointment. I hope they will be able to explain everything then and if not, ask who you need to be referred to so you can get this assessed.

    All the best,
