Sinister structures

Hi all, first time posting and am currently going through diagnosis but am a little confused. I have neen suffering some very painful abdominal discomfort for a few months. I visited my GP who referred my for an US scan which came back normal but was unable to see all of my pancreas. Still in pain my GP referred me for a CT which showed sinister structures on my stomach and pancreas and fluid in my abdomen. My GP sent a referral for the "pathway", I believe it last called, within a week I was having an endoscopy. Sample of my stomach were taken and the GI consultant said that in his experience there was nothing to worry about and the biopsy's would confirm that in 8-10 weeks. Elated I left but in the drive home my wife pointed out that they hadn't looked at or mentioned my pancreas or the fluid in my abdomen. My GP was equally concerned and phoned the consultants secretary but was told that nothing would be done until they get the biopsy results. Still in pain and now having to take time from work and also the worry I am going private. I am missing something of is this normal?
Hope this makes sense and someone can shed some light on this.
thanks

  • Hello MikeJD and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are currently having symptoms and are awaiting some results. I appreciate what an anxious time this must be for you and the concerns you must still have.

I'm afraid it is difficult to understand the GI consultants thinking without being directly involved in your care or having access to your medical records. Your GP has done the right thing in trying to get hold of the consultant to query the wait for biopsy results and further investigations to find out more about the pancreas and fluid. However it sounds like they too have also come up against a brick wall that is out of their control.

You would assume that if the consultant was concerned that something sinister was going on they would be arranging more tests. Hopefully it is because they aren't overly concerned that they are happy to wait for the biopsy results before doing anything else. Of course if symptoms are worsening do let your GP know or out of hours call NHS111 for advice.

I can understand you exploring going down the private route right now and hope you are able to get the answers you are looking for.

As I say keep talking to your GP about any further changes and hope you know more about your situation very soon. Please get back if you have further questions, you are also welcome to call the helpline on 0808 800 4040 mon-fri 9-5 if you prefer.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thanks Naomi, I guess an explanation from the consultant was what I was looking for post endoscopy for the fluid and pancreas structures. We are kind of in limbo as it stands. Appreciating I'm not the only one and they are very busy. I'm going down the private route in hope I can a longer more informed conversation with a specialist. Mean time I will do as you suggest and keep in touch with my GP and possibly phone the consultants secretary to see if there is more info on my case.

    thanks again

    Mike

  • I have spoke with the gynaecology consultants secretary about my operation date as the gp wanted to start new meds and was phoned back the next day when she was able to give me my operation date. The secretary can ask questions for you they are your first point of call. I would try that before going private as you will see the same drs, l hope you have the answers soon. Waiting is not easy especially when you feel uncomfortable.
    Take care
