bruised feeling in side of left breast

i am 18 years old and for the past couple of weeks i've even experiencing pain in my left side which also affects the side of my left breast. at first i thought i'd slept funny (i have G cups so this happens sometimes) but the dull ache isn't going. i'm quite the hypochondriac so i check my breasts literally everyday for my own peace of mind. i thought i found a lump (it feels different to my right breast, which has no issues at all) and immediately thought the worst, so i went to see my GP. i had two separate examinations from two separate doctors who said they couldn't feel anything, the first of which even saying 'don't worry, you're too young to have cancer'. but really, you're never too young. the pain worsens when i feel where the 'lump' is, which makes me think it's a clogged milk duct or a cyst as it flares up and calms down depending on the pressure on it. the pain seems to relieve itself a little bit when i wear a bra. my second doctor has referred me to the breast clinic for my peace of mind, but i'm really nervous as to what they might find. as i said, i'm only 18 and these past few weeks have made me panic and cry more than anything ever has; i haven't been sleeping or eating or even thinking properly.

  • Hi,

Sorry that you're going through all of this at only 18, it's such a stressful thing to go through.

I hate when GPs say you're too young and dismiss it! However, it is very unlikely. For now, just try to think of positives, you're young, 90% of breast clinic referrals turn out to be nothing to worry about and also, breast pain is not normally linked to breast cancer.

Take someone with you to the breast clinic for support. You'll likely see a consultant first and then they'll send you for an ultrasound and possible biopsies. Neither are painful so please don't worry yourself about these.

Try to keep yourself busy in the meantime and stay away from Dr Google! He is not our friend!!!

    Best of luck xx

  • thank you for such a quick and kind response! i'm feeling relatively positive but i'm sure you know how quickly that can turn to pure fear at certain points.

    i'll keep you updated!! :) x

  • No problem. If you've got any questions, just ask. Although probably not young to you! I'm still classed as 'young' to have breast cancer at 32. Unfortunately I do have it and I'm by no means an expert but happy to answer any questions you've got.

Yes, please do keep me updated x

  • Hello Sherbertlenom and thanks for posting,

Statistically breast cancer really is extremely rare in teenagers, so try not to let fear and worry run away with you - I know this can be easier said than done.

I think it is fair to say that over a lifetime a lot of us will experience some sort of health scare if not several, but most of the time nothing serious will be going on, so try and keep an open mind and work out what helps you to cope best while you are waiting for your appointment. And as Jamie says be wary of Dr Google.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. Our Freephone number is 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays 9-5.

    All the best,

    Julia

  • again, thank you so much -- honestly your responses have given me a lot more peace of mind :) i will let you know what happens and phone if anything concerns me. thanks again x
