could this be cancer?

hi. I’m 24 and have been referred to the urgent referral care for breast screening. i initially went into my GP because it’s been roughly a year and my breast are still producing milk, it happens a lot when my cycle is due. the milk is only coming from one breast which is the left, as that’s the breast my son preferred. i know that 1 of the symptoms for breast cancer is leaking/discharge from the nipple but I’m only leaking milk, that’s all. during my appointment with my GP she examined my breast and the same left breast which is leaking milk is somewhat slightly thicker in tissue. I told her that I am currently on my cycle which could be why my breast might have felt more ‘thicker/fuller’ right? she sent me to get blood test done for my prolactin and now I’m scheduled to get a ultrasound done on my breast in 2 weeks. she didn’t explain anything to me like why she’s referring me to the urgent cancer unit. I’m terrified. I’ve been checking an feeling my breast to try and feel what my GP did but I don’t feel anything.

Could I have cancer?

  • Hello Tians and thank you for getting back to us.

I am sorry you are having these concerns about thicker breast tissue but as my colleague Naomi said previously it would be unusual for it to be a cancer. It is important that any symptoms are thoroughly investigated which is why they have referred you, but no one here will be able to say what this fullness of the breast means.

There are other conditions that affect the breast that are benign ( non cancer) this link discusses them.

Waiting for appointment or results can cause anxiety, this link tells you more about breast clinic appointments which may give you a better idea of what to expect so may help how you are feeling.

Take care Tians, and do try to keep yourself busy so your mind is distracted. This may help time pass quicker for you until you get to your hospital appointment. If you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline, the number to call is 0808 800 4040, 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.

  • thank you for helping me. I'm trying not to worry that much, my appointment is this Friday and hopefully everything will be fine. I've been examining my breast myself the last couple days and I'm just praying for the best. I don't feel no hard lumps or thickness but I'm still producing milk which was the main issues for my transfer to the hospital to being with.
