Worried about bowel cancer at 23

Hello all!

I'm a 23yo female and I've just noticed over the past 2 days I've started to have blood both in my poo and whilst wiping (the blood is bright red) . I've had blood whilst wiping before years ago but never had it actually in my poo. I'm scared of it being bowel cancer and I've also got an appointment tomorrow for a blood liver function test as I'm also suffering from gallstones which may be irritating my liver. During investigating my gallstone issue my bowel movements have been somewhat all over the place, constipated one moment or the runs next but lately its all been solid poops which have felt a lil sharp on the way out (I'm really hoping this is just a fissure). I'm just scared this is bowel cancer really and could do with peace of mind :( I'm going to mention it tomorrow for sure and hopefully they can give me an examination

  • Hi, welcome to the forum. This must be such a difficult time for you. I'm so sorry you already had issues beforehand and now have this.

I know what it's like to see fresh blood when wiping and in poo and it feels so alarming. I remember before that, I was so stressed out about uni but once I saw the blood, suddenly nothing else mattered to me anymore. The first thing that came to my mind is bowel cancer.

The reassuring thing is that at our age, it is rare. I'd be freaking out so much if I was old. But it's not impossible to get it at a young age or it could be other things so best to get it checked and hopefully treated.

I hope your appointment goes well. Yes do mention you are worried about it being cancer. I didn't mention that I was worried. I used to just say my symptoms. I was on a referral waiting list for 4 months.

But 2 weeks ago, I had a telephone appointment and it was unexpectedly early while I was visiting a school I student taught at last year. That had already brought loads of emotions because I was living my best life last year.

I ended up breaking down while I was saying my symptoms and saying I'm so scared and that it's really hard putting up with symptoms. She referred me on the 2ww referral but reassured it is unlikely to be cancer at my age. I have a sigmoidoscopy appointment on Friday.

Let me know how you got on if you would like to xx

  • Hi Worried Duck and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear that you are having these symptoms.  Seeing blood in your poo can be very worrying, but it can be for many reasons other than cancer, such as bowel inflammation, polyps (harmless growths), piles and sometimes no cause is ever found for it.

There is lots of information here about different reasons for having blood in your poo, which you may find helpful.

Bowel cancer in someone your age is very unusual, it is more likely as we get older (over 60).  But it's a good idea to make a GP appointment if you have a change in bowel habits or bleeding from your bottom, as they will be able to examine you and rule out different causes for the blood.

I hope you get some answers from your GP.

If you would like to talk to someone about this you can call us on  Freephone 0808 800 4040 and talk to one of our nurses.  The lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Rachel
