Breast screening

Hi. I'm 24 and stopped breastfeeding my son 1 year ago, a few months after I had stopped my breast especially the left one (my son preferred that breast) would still leak milk. I went to the doctors and they told me that was normal and it should stop gradually, however it hasn't. So today I went back to my GP and gotten a breast examination and was told my left breast tissue is slightly thicker and I'm being sent to have a ultrasound on my breast. I have no discharge bedsides milk coming from 1 breast. i only notice the leaking happens mostly when I'm either on my cycle or it's due to come. I am right now currently on my cycle, that's why I went to my GP firstly because that's when my breast will leak. I'm absolutely scared but trying to remain calm for my son.

  • Hi tians

Your GP is right to send you to the breast clinic as they have the equipment and knowledge to see what is happening inside your breast, much like being sent to the orthopaedic clinic if you had a problem with your knees. It doesn't mean you have cancer. Try not to worry x

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I appreciate that having symptoms can be a worry but at your age it would be extremely rare to be breast cancer.

Your GP has done the right thing in referring you to the breast unit and hopefully you will be seen soon and get some more information about what the matter might be.

Whilst many women will stop producing milk after breast feeding within weeks or months after some will continue to have milk for years.

I hope the appointment goes well and in the mean time keep yourself busy with your son.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • hi, I now have a appointment next week at the breast clinic for my ultrasound. I've had to have blood test to check my prolactin levels again.
I know that some women years after they've finished breastfeeding, that can still produce milk which is whole reason I went to see my GP. however when she was examining me, she said my left breast on one side it felt more thicker, I'm guessing she meant in breast tissue? i also read that being on you're cycle can cause you're breast to become tender and slightly swollen. I'm going to try and be calm, thank you. :)
