Brother has very rare inoperable cancer

Hi my brother has been diagnosed with a very rare cancer growing round the vein to his heart.

they have told him an operation is not possible as it's hard to get to.  Chemo will only be used to help as symptoms worsen.  It's awful and would welcome any treatments that my help prolong his life, he's 74 but very fit.

I've found a procedure trans arterial chemoembolisation  ( TACE) is this a possibility?

thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post

As nurses we don't recommend treatments I'm afraid. This has to come from your brother's specialist team who are familiar with all his medical details.

Trans arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is a treatment used to treat primary or secondary liver cancers so it is unlikely to be a suitable treatment for your brother. You can read more about this treatment at this link to our website.

With rare tumours there is not always written guidance about the best way to treat them as less is known about them. This is because there have been fewer people to study compared to the more common cancers which are seen more often so have been easier to research.  Again your best source of advice about treatments is likely to be your brother’s medical team.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
