9 week post mastectomy

Had mastectomy 9 week ago, have seen Brest cancer nurse who told me results of op. Referred to Oncologist, I've  had 2 E&C chemo sessions already 1 to follow then 9 weekly chemo paclixitol.  The concern I have is that, I have not as yet been back to see the surgeon to check anything or talk about the corrective surgery which is needed to put right the horrible scar which I have been left with. And as yet have not been measured and fitted with a breast prothesis, received a softie after surgery but need to feel abit more normal I'm afraid.  Is it normal to be left this long before seeing Consultant, or should I be chasing up an appointment?  Feeling really out of it with the chemo, and suffering greatly with cording pain after surgery and hardness and pain around scar. Feeling rather alone.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you have had surgery and now chemotherapy for breast cancer.

I think you should speak with your breast care nurse ( leave a message on voicemail) about when you will be seen by the breast surgeon, your concerns for your breast and about getting your breast prosthesis.  You may find that the nurses who give you your chemotherapy could ask the breast nurse to come and see you while you are having your chemotherapy, or you could could say this in a message to the breast nurses.

While you are having chemotherapy you would not be able to undergo any surgery , so if you do need to have it this will usually be given after the chemotherapy has finished.

The look and feel of your breast will change over time and your pain should get better. Some women are advised about breast exercises and this might help , you can read about it here

We have information for women after they have had a mastectomy, you can see it here

I hope this has been of some help. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
