Keep going to the GP

I've been in and out of my GP since March about bowel problems. I was referred at the beginning but was on a long waiting list. I suddenly got period problems in June and all tests came clear. I suddenly got urine problems this month and all tests again came clear. My bowel symptoms worsened and now I'm on a 2ww suspected cancer referral for that.

I'm wondering if during this time, it's still okay to go them about a different problem?

I'm scared they're going to think that I just keep going to them and it's one problem after another. I feel like it sounds like I'm faking my symptoms, since my tests come clear but I don't understand how they come clear when I can literally see and suffer from the symptoms. (heavy and prolonged vaginal bleeding and incontinence).

The other problem is about my knee which I haven't gone to them about. My right knee's been clicking since June 2021 but it wasn't that painful so I didn't care. In the past few months, it became moderately painful when walking up and down the stairs or sitting/standing up from sitting but it wasn't unbearable. But now in the last few days, it becomes severely painful when I least expect it.

The other day, I went to feed my cat and squatted and then I screamed in pain as my right knee felt so stiff and sore. I also screamed in pain today when I walked down the stairs and when I bent to collect something. I'm just scared now whenever I'm about to bend/ straighten my leg, I don't know if this is a proper problem I should go to them about or if I should wait to see if it goes.

I'm finding this knee pain worse than my bowel problems.

  • Of course you should go to them if you have another problem. I know it feels like you are being a hypocondriac, but better to look that way (and hopefully they won't think that anyway) than to put up with pain unnecessarily.

Just to let you know, I had prolonged menstruation about three years ago and it was never explained. The doctor prescribed birth control and after about a year, I did an experiment myself, coming off it and...all returned to normal. So that can happen without anything serious causing it. All my tests came back clear too, so they figured it was just one of those things.

  • Weirdly, i have this issue going to the dentist. I grind my teeth in my sleep (wear a night guard), and never away from there. This has been for the last 3 years. It does get embarrassing, so i get where you're coming from. Always paranoid thinking they think you just love turning up for everything and anything.

  • I had gynaecology surgery that became quite extensive l had various problems, pain, infections in the five wounds, bladder infections, nausea and abdominal pain, diarrhoea due to the tablets l was given,  this all took a few phone calls and visits to the surgery. The drs were fine and eventually I got better. Don't feel uncomfortable about seeing the drs if you need to.

  • Thank you [@MargaretMary][@ProfBaw]‍ and [@Alfieisastar]‍ for your replies and reassurance.

I sent a message last night to my GP about my knee and usually when I send a message at the night, they respond at like 8:30am (which is a lot earlier than I expect to get a response) and have a telephone appointment booked for a few hours later. But today, I was so surprised to wake up late with no response.

I'm also waiting for stool sample results and I messaged on Friday. The previous days, I asked for other test results and they texted saying they were normal. But they called on Friday and said that they received my message and it's nothing to worry about but I'm already on the 2ww  so they'll review me after that. And I was just thinking 'so can you tell me my test result?' but I just said 'okay thanks'. I'm so awkward on phone calls.

At 11am today, I sent another message asking for my test results and I'm shocked I haven't got a response since they usually respond in like half an hour. I wonder if it's a busy day because I can't imagine they would just look at a patient's message and decide not to respond.

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing some tests for the bowel symptoms you are having.

We always suggest if people are experiencing symptoms that are ongoing or worstening to get them checked out, just to be on the safe side. There is usually a simple and non serious reason for them but it is important to go to be sure.

This forum cannot diagnose or tell anyone what the matter is i'm afraid so do contact your doctor about your knee and see what they have to say.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
