Morphine alternatives?

Dad has been diagnosed with metastases in his liver, bladder, spine, around his aorta. He's had a dose of radiation and is now on liquid morphine of which he has one dose a day.
This morphine is turning him into a zombie, he has a brief window of lucidity then post dose he's shaking, fatigued, not present, shaking. Just 3 weeks ago he was lively, active and totally alert.
He's such an intelligent man and this morphine has reduced him. He must have his pain managed but is this the only option??

  • Hello eddiesdaughters and thank you for your post,

I am very sorry to hear about your dad's situation and I can appreciate your concern about him.

I wonder if your dad has been referred to a community based palliative care team, sometimes they are known as the Macmillan team?  I say this because they are experts in symptom control. If your dad has not been referred to this team then do talk to his GP on his behalf about it.  There are different types of pain relief however the stronger types are all opioid based and while morphine is an opioid a different type might be better tolerated.  On our website we have information about pain and the different ways it can be treated, you can see it here and here

You might find it helpful to read about the type of support you and your dad could get at home, we have information about that on our website here

I hope this has been helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
