Prognosis

Hi, my mum has been battling and surviving cancer for 8 years. Firstly she was diagnosed with bladder cancer and had her bladder removed. There was still some cancer at the ends of what was removed and last year this had become a problem. In January 2022 mum had a kidney removed and 70% of her pancreas but she is already back in hospital, it has spread to her remaining kidney, her lungs and her stomach and we've just been told that no further surgery is planned.
I know it's not an exact science but I'd like to have some idea of how long we have left with her if she decides not to bother with the chemotherapy?

  • Thank you for your post. I was sorry to read about your mum's situation. This must be a difficult time for you.

I can appreciate you want to know more about your mum’s prognosis. But I’m afraid I can't tell you very much, as someone's outlook will depend on several features of their disease. Prognosis is really a question best answered by her specialist team. This is because they are familiar with all her medical details and will know so much more about her individual situation. Doctors base their assessment of someone's outlook/prognosis on their experience of looking after other patients with the same condition. This will vary to a degree, depending on a person’s age, extent of their disease, and their general overall health, and response to any treatment given.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
