Breast papilloma

Hello!
i was recently told I need to have a full milk ducts removal on my left breast.
i am 37y and i first notice nipple discharge while in the shower in march of this year. I wasn't very alarmed but still decided to get it checked.
went to my GP and referred me to the breast clinic. I had my appointment in April, just ultrasound and blood tests, breast smear.
they said everything looked fine and said I should have another check up in a couple of months. June came and was told that I needed surgery and other smear was taken in the day. During my appointment I was told that it could be an infection of the milk ducts.
a couple of weeks later I was called back for an appointment and the dr diagnosed me with papilloma. They said epithelial tissue was found in the smear and it will be best to remove it.
i did a bit of research and found that papilloma is like a wart in the milk ducts but nothing was found in the ultrasound and due to my age I didn't have a mammogram.
i am currently more confused than ever waiting for my surgery date. Anyone else dealing with something similar?
This situation just made anxious and I feel like someone is grabbing me from my throat.

  • Hi MujerLatina,

I'm sorry to hear about the confusing time you are having.  I don't know why the papilloma wasn't seen on the ultrasound in April, it may be helpful for you to talk to the breast clinic so they can go through the results with you.

We have some information on our website here about breast papilloma, and what happens if you are told you have it.  Breast papilloma is a benign (not cancerous) condition, it is often treated with surgery.  The cells are then examined under a microscope, which can help confirm the diagnosis of papilloma.

Waiting for surgery is often an anxious time, some people find it helpful to distract themselves by seeing friends and family and taking part in hobbies they enjoy.

I hope you get your date soon.

Please feel free to give us a call if you want to talk through anything else.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Rachel

  • Hi I realise you wrote this over a year ago and not sure if your still active on these forums, but I'm going through a similar thing. I attended the breast clinic this morning as I found a lump just above my nipple, I had a ultrasound done and the lady said she thought it was a papilloma so did 3 core needle biopsies on it plus drained 2 cysts. She said if it is a papilloma they will probably want to remove it as they can turn cancerous. Could you please tell me your outcome? I cant find any other people on here who have mentioned them and googling is scaring the life out of me so I need to stop doing that. I really do hope you see this message! Thank you

  • Hello RosenInn and thanks for posting,

Just to let you know if you haven't already come across it, there is more information about breast papillomas on our website here and on the website of another charity Breast Cancer Now, follow this link to see it. Bear in mind that a papilloma is not a cancer and is very unlikely to develop into cancer.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
