Just wondering if it is standard practive to do a biopsy on any suspicious mole which is removed? I've just been referred by my GP to have mine removed after he has just looked at it, so i'm wondering whether I will find out if it was benign or not?

Hello esd123 and thanks for posting,
If a mole looks suspicious enough they usually just remove it all in what is called an excisional biopsy. The whole mole is then sent away to the laboratory for further examination to find out if it is skin cancer or not. But beforehand the skin specialist (dermatologist) would tell you what they thought so you would have some idea first based on their examination.
Biopsy results may take several weeks to come back, this can vary and may take longer, it depends on capacity, so ask what sort of timeframe to expect.
