Breast cancer

Good morning , my mum was recently  diagnosed  with stage 1a grade 2 breast cancer. She has just had her lumpectomy  on Tuesday  to remove the 18mm lump. We now have the long 2 week wait ti meet with the consultant  and I am beside myself, how often does grade and and stage change  after surgery ?  Thank you all for your support I'm reaching for help  x

  • Hello Jodie292 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your mum and can understand this is a stressful time.

Grade and stage can sometimes be reviewed and change after breast cancer surgery, but I don't think it is all that common, more often things will stay the same so try not to dwell on it as thinking about this sort of thing can run you ragged.

I spotted on another post that your mum's cancer was picked up through screening so hopefully the early stage will be confirmed and her treatment will be straightforward and successful.

Try not to over think it and take things one step at a time.

Feel free to call us if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9-5, weekdays.

    Wishing you the best,

  • Thank  you so much for your words, I find comfort in hearing this. Yes mum found out she had 18mm mass on her routine mammogram. She has them every 3 years and the last one in 2019 they were not concerned  and then this one 2022 they found the cancerous  one. They said stage 1a and grade 2 and that it had nit spread to lymph  nodes. She had the surgery and dye and waiting for the results I'm not sure why I can't feel more positive  about this.  I feel selfish for feeling this way  but I never show mum, I always show the brave positive  face.
