Thyroid nodule

I have a thyroid nodule  I had a fine needle aspiration biopsy in Nov 21 which came back OK they now want to do another one as it has suspicious parts on the scan, hopefully just being thorough ? Little bit worried

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand that waiting for further tests can be unsettling. If the doctors see a suspicious area on the scan  and the biopsy comes back showing normal cells it is not uncommon to have a further biopsy to confirm this result.

Sometimes an ultrasound is done at the same time to guide the needle in to the right place. You may find it helpful to read this NHS information about how thyroid lumps are investigated here

I do hope that you know more soon.

If you would like to ring and chat with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine

  • Thanks for reply ,how likely is it to be cancerous?

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

I am afraid I can't tell you the answer to your question. It is really only the pathologist who can look at the cells under the microscope who will be able to tell you more.

Hopefully when you see the specialist you will be able to talk to them about your scan. They are better placed to answer these questions as they have access to your scans and I am only going on the information that you have given me.

Try if you can to take one step at a time until you know more. I know it is unsettling waiting but it is good that the doctors are checking to make sure.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
