  • Hello wendyhug,

Making him comfortable is a great idea after all he has been through.Remember the effects of radio/chemo are cumalitive and you are pretty much all done in by the end of the course. The body will be going through a shock from the removal of the shock of having treatments if this makes sense.

Having gone through chemo/radio myself and seeing firsthand the brutal effects of such,l would say its early days to be jumping to any definite conclusions.Keep an open mind, try and do anything/everything to encourage food and liquid intake, with absolutely nothing out of bounds, little and often and think tiny temptations rather than hearty intakes.Be prepared for the body functions to ricochet from one extreme to the other, equilibrium can be eliusive and take time to reappear.Initial improvements can be so miniscule and difficult to discern, its only over an extended time period that you can judge forward momentum.

No one on this forum can give you an answer for sure of the direction of travel, just encourage you to encourage your dad to keep on trying for the little things, they can add up in the longer term.

Hope it works out for you,

                                                                                               David

  • thank you david for your reply much appreciated i know it's a lot for him but we at a stand still till waiting in outcome of treatment i work for NHS & deal with a lot of end of life with same symptoms so bit worrying at the minute that is why i was asking for advice i just don't want it to be to late  & i hope you doing well david after your treatment xx

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad and appreciate this must be a tough time for you all.

Without being involved in your dad's care it is difficult to say what may be going on and I would suggest you contact his own specialist team or GP so they can assess him, today if possible.

There could be a number of things going on that may be linked to the treatment, the disease or something completely unrelated that could be treated, so do speak to someone when you can.

Constipation can be very unpleasant and make people feel pretty rough, I hope he is drinking plenty and has been given some treatment to help him pass stools more easily.

When the end of life approaches often patients do become less well, more sleepy and eat and drink less but usually it is a gradual decline. When this time comes the doctors and nurses will know and talk to the family to make sure he is kept as comfortable as possible.

Often patients are referred to a macmillan nurse or community palliative care team who can help manage symptoms and provide support both the patient and their families, so do ask about this if your dad isn't known to one of these already.

Do get back if you need to or you are welcome to call us on 0808 800 4040 mon-fri 9-5 if you prefer.

    Best wishes
