Breast cancer ?

3 months ago I started getting a small amount of black discharge from my left nipple. I went to the doctors after a few weeks and they took a sample. Then I was referred to the breast cancer clinic at the hospital. They put it through as urgent so I should have been seen within two weeks. Its been 3 months now and still no appointment. I called them and they told me their waiting list is 12 weeks long. Today I have work up with a sore/tender left arm pit.  I can not feel any lumps.  The wait is so stressful. I just want to know what's wrong with me. Does this sound like possible cancer ?  And Any advice on how to not think about it every waking moment please ? Thank you xx

  • Hi Jenny134,

I'm afraid we are not able to tell you if you have cancer.

It does sound like a stressful time for you.  An urgent referral can be worrying but it is worth remembering that 9 out of 10 people referred this way are found not to have cancer.

Having to wait for an appointment can be difficult and it can be useful to find some things to distract yourself. Some people find that keeping their normal routine and sleep patterns help them to feel calm. Taking part in your usual hobbies, seeing friends and family and doing things you enjoy can also stop you worrying and thinking about the appointment.

Have you tried contacting your GP to ask about your referral?  You could also make an appointment to discuss your tender arm pit.

We do have lots of information on our website about waiting times when you have a referral here.  There is also information about signs and symptoms of Breast Cancer that you may find helpful.

If you would like any more information or to talk things through please give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, our lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
