FIT test waiting times

Hi, does anyone know how long it's taking to get back results from a FIT test. I sent mine off last Friday and I'm besides myself with worry and just want to know when I should expect to hear back.

  • Hi it is so hard waiting for test results. I don't know how long it's supposed to take but I got mine after a week.

I sent my FIT test on a Friday and the gp received the results on the following Thursday and called me to arrange a doctors telephone appointment the next day.

Her words were 'it's positive but we already knew there was blood in your poo (as I had told her), so now it's time to do a process of ruling things out.'

If you've seen blood, you're likely to get a positive result aswell but it's important to remember that most people with positive FIT results don't end up having cancer. Really it is good that mine came positive as I was worried about the blood so wanted further tests done to find out the cause and get treated.

  • I have had rectal bleeding since last November although it seems to disappear for months. I showed my GP a photo of what I think to be internal hemorrhoids and she agreed they did look like them. She then said I could do the FIT test for reassurance as I have health anxiety.

When I did the test I wasn't bleeding nor did I see any blood on the stool so I'm just scared about it still coming back positive. Especially as I'm currently pregnant.

  • I've also never actually seen blood in my poo to my knowledge. The blood has been in the toilet or I saw it on top of the poo once.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I know waiting any length of time when you are worried can be stressful. It usually takes up to two weeks to get FIT test results. You can read more about this on the NHS website at this link.

I hope everything turns out to be okay.Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • That does sound very stressful. I hope your pregnancy goes smoothly and I hope that the previous rectal bleeding is not due to anything serious.

It's good that your gp got you to do the test as she'll be able to find out if you still have rectal bleeding. It detects microscopic blood that you may not be able to see. If it does come positive, you'll be referred for further tests to find the cause of the bleeding.

There could be so many reasons like haemorrhoids, ibs, crohn's disease etc so it's not always cancer. I know it's still scary waiting, especially since you have health anxiety and are pregnant.

The reason doctors get young people to do FIT tests is for evidence that there's actually blood so it can make their decision to refer to bowel specialists or not.
