Struggling mentally from symptoms

Hi I am a healthy active 16 year old and I am feeling constantly stressed about what symptoms I have at the moment. It all started around a month ago where I was sitting my GCSES, I had a ridiculously runny nose, I dont believe i felt unwell as thats the only part i remember of it.

After finishing my GCSES, i had my end of year prom. which the following morning I had a hoarse voice, I didnt think much of it. My voice has been the same from the start and isnt worsening nor getting better at the same time. I also get a sharp pain after i burp for around less than a second. I have a dry cough ws well. I have done far to much googling over these past 2 weeks and 2 days of my symptoms and if it's cancer or just a infection.

My point is, i had a infection prior to my hoarseness now, so what I am thinking is as i was already not feeling well and then going to prom and screaming and shouting to the songs playing I believe that it could be just two infections?

Does anyone have any words or thoughts to this that may help my mental health be at rest. I really am stressed at the moment and just wouldn't mind someone just telling me I am fine and will get over it soon enough.

Would also like to add, I have no difficulty swallowing, breathing, ear pain. It is only my voice

I am super stressed i keep forgetting things, i also have a lymph node popped up on the back of my neck, its like pea size.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms.

You sound like you have had a lot going on in your life with your GCSE'S and your Prom's, and sometimes when we are tired it can make symptoms feel so much worse and it is also telling our body to slow down.

Now your exams are finished try and take it easy, drink plenty of water and get some rest. If your symptoms don't get any better then do make an appointment to see your GP where you can be assessed. The hot weather that we have all been experiencing does not help.

Lymph nodes come up at the sign of an infection or when someone is feeling run down so do give it a chance to settle.

Cancer of the larynx is very uncommon in your age group so try if you can not to overthink what it could be.

I am not sure whether you have had a chance to chat this through with a trusted adult such as one of your parents.

If your symptoms don't settle then do make an appointment to see your GP so you can talk through how you are feeling with them.

If you are feeling anxious about your health which can be exhausting, then you may want to look at the NHS link 'Every Mind Matters' here

    I hope this helps.

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

It just bothers me to be honest, my voice has been hoarse for 2 weeks, isnt improved or worsened, only thing is that after eating or drinking, it goes away for a short period, then again it's back again. Only over symptoms i ever feel is a burning sensation and a tickly cough some nights. I dont feel any lumps when i swallow. I'm seeing my GP very soon

The other thing is, I think from my own perspective, before i got this hoarse voice i had a illness prior to it, which was a very runny nose and my face hurt. So i thought from that it could just be one nasty infection and going to prom with it just added that since i was already ill, i dont know, this is just me ranting on to get how i feel out there.

Thanks once again Catherine for the support and kind words, much appreciated.
