Post menopausal bleeding

In November I experienced bleeding  10 years post menopause and immediately contacted my doctor. I was sent on a 2 week referral. I had a transvaginal ultrasound whilst in the office which showed thickening of 11cm,  a small polyp was removed and I had a biopsy which was clear also had a smear test. The doctor said that the small polyp wouldn't have caused the bleed but a larger polyp could be present and would cause my womb to appear thick. She said I would need a follow up as we needed to find a cause. She suggested it could possibly be hormone related (I am not on any medication). My appointment was for 6 month but was cancelled twice. I have an appointment next week for a hysteroscopy 8 months on.  I have had bleeding twice whilst awaiting appointment. I waited 3 weeks for the biopsy result which was torture. My concern is could the biopsy result have been incorrect. Does this happen often? I am  starting to feel anxious again.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

Please be reassured that the biopsy you had did not show cancer, if there was an uncertainty about the result then this would have been recorded by the pathologist's results.

You are being followed up and you might need to have another biopsy to make sure everything is ok, but that will only be done if it is needed and will still not mean you necessarily have cancer.

I think it is natural to feel anxious with the appointment coming up. When you are seen you will have more information about your situation so do ask questions if you need to.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
