Waiting for Biopsy result

Hi there. I'm new on here and was just wanting a wee vent. I had a biopsy of my cervix taken almost 3 weeks ago. The gyncologest said the results could take 6-8 weeks. Is this normal if the results come back cancerous? I had a smear and the nurse needed a doctors opinion. They then gave me an urgent referral and the following week I had the biopsy took.  I asked the nurse at my smear what was wrong and she told me it looked like wee polyps but it was on my notes I had this before so wasn't to worry (was never referred to hospital before).
I went to hospital and got a biopsy. She seemed to be down there a while and afterwards I asked how many polyps were there, to which she simply replied it wasn't polyps. That was basically all I was given. So 3 weeks on and still waiting on results and feeling a bit nervous x

Can anyone give me their HONEST opinion on wether or not this wait is good or bad? X

  • Hello Joanne and thanks for contacting us.

I can tell you are concerned about this, but I am not going to be able to answer whether this wait is good or bad. We don't normally relate the time biopsy's take to come back with what is then found. It is fairly normal for biopsy results to take up to 6-8 weeks to come back, whatever the outcome.

I do not know what the colposcopist meant when she said that it wasn't polyp, and I can understand why you feel nervous, but until the biopsies have been seen under a microscope it is difficult for anyone to know exactly what may be the problem. As you have said cervical polyp's are rarely cancer, but it is important that they are thorough in their investigation.

The main thing now Joanne is how you can keep yourself busy and your mind occupied, until the results do come though. Being distracted can hopefully help the time pass to try and reduce your worry.

Take care and if you find it helpful to talk things through then do call our helpline, the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040, 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.
