Severe headaches after EC chemo

Had my third EC on friday and yet again straight after the headache from hell across the front of my head. Now 2 days on it's the worse ever and nothing will budge it, 30/500 co codamol with naproxen,  loads of fluids, rest, fresh air. I have told the nurses past 2 cycles but no advice given just seems to be a side effect. Last 2 cycles gradually went after a week but it's so debilitating. Dont know what's causing it, the actual chemo, steroids or anti sickness and gets worse after day one of the filgrastim injections. Any ideas so welcome to relieve it a bit.

  • Hello and thank you  for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the really horrible headaches that you have been experiencing and I can imagine this must make your treatment very difficult to cope with.

I can't say what could be the cause or whether it is a combination of all three drugs but do continue to feed back to your doctors. I am not sure how many more course of EC (Epirubicin and Cyclophosphamide) you are having and whether the doctors may be introducing different treatments after three or four courses of EC but do ask them.

You have posted on ask the nurses and if you post on a different thread you may get more response from other women going through a similar regime.

I did come across this old cancerchat post from 2017 of other women who were experiencing headaches and they did give one or two tips on how to help manage the headaches. Have a look here

You may also find it helpful to get in touch with the charity Breast Cancer Now. They have a service called 'Someone Like Me' where they try and put you in touch with other women who are going through a similar experience'. Have a look at the details here

I do hope that as time goes on your headaches will get better but do let your team know the effect that it is having on you.

If you would like to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to give us a ring. We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is 0808 800 4040.

    All the very best,

    Catherine
