Question

I have a lymph node that is around half an inch or just below on the right side of my jaw. I also have a pea sized lymph node on other side of my jaw. I also have other pea sized nodes beside my groin and on my neck but I've been told this is normal because in slim. I've had all the lymph nodes for around 2 years. The lymph node in my jaw has never changed and its very movable. I also have no symtoms of it being enlarged due to lymphoma. What else could possible be cuasing this? The only thing that is says online for a lymph node being swollen for a long Time is cancer but I've no symtoms of cancer apart from just having a lymph node swollen for an extended amount of time.

  • Hello BradleyG and thanks for your further post

There are a variety of reasons for symptoms to develop and for most the cause will have a straightforward medical explanation and won't be anything as serious as cancer, so try if you can not to overly worry. One of the most common reasons for pea side lumps lumps is infection. Lumps can sometimes be felt for a long time after the infection has cleared and they may never go back to their original size.

As my colleague Sarah said, it's best to get this checked out by your doctor. They will be able to assess you and decide if you need to go for any further tests. Although this can seem frightening, in most cases the symptoms will be caused by something else other than cancer. But it is always sensible to get any problems you have checked out just to be on the safe side.

I hope you know more about your situation soon.

    Best wishes,

    Celene

  • A year ago I got my lymph nodes scanned 4 months prior to having It without a cuase. The ones under both sides of my jaw are still there and still yet there without a cuase. There also just below half an inch in size. Ive had them for just over 2 years now. Could this even develop into cancer at some stage? And could it possibly be cancer even though I have no symptoms and the lymph nodes have never changed.

  • Hello there and thanks for getting back in touch

It can be a worry having lumps in the body for no real reason that don't go away. However it is reassuring they haven't changed and you have had them scanned and everything appeared okay.

Lymph nodes often swell when the body is fighting off infection but they can remain swollen for a good time after and sometimes remain swollen for years. These are known as reactive lymph nodes and are harmless without the need to worry.

I think if they haven't changed with time and you have no other symptoms there probably isn't anything to be worried about.

An ultrasound scan is good at picking up abnormalities or irregularities in lumps so I am sure if they had been unsure or concerned about what they saw they would have ran some more tests.

If you remain worried do talk it through with your own doctor.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • so in my case would it be likey for me to have reactive lymph nodes? And are they only a concern if they begin to change etc?

  • Hi, I think we're having similar issues! I've had a small hard moveable ball in my left jaw for some time now, and lots of palpable lymph nodes elsewhere (doctors have said because I'm slim) although there are a few larger ones. Doctors have said there's nothing to worry about though :/ Have you had any scans for yours? what were the results?

  • Hello Bradley,

I'm afraid the nurses are not going to know if there is anything the matter with your nodes now, or whether you would have problems in the future.

As you are still concerned about them then do contact your GP to be properly assessed.

    Take care,

    Sarah.

  • I had a scan around 2 years ago and everything was fine but the nodes are still enlarged. I think there just swollen due to a past infection because I have no symptoms or signs of them being due to lymphoma. That's my reasoning for the bigger ones that are around half and inch. Then the smaller ones in my neck and groin etc are just probably feelable because I am slim

  • I'm just wondering tho to see if it's likely for that to occur for some peace of mind because I'm worried. I have to come here for peace of mind because Google gives me mixed answers.

  • Would it be likely for my to have reactive lymph nodes then? And are they only really something to worry about if they change etc?...

  • Hello and thanks for posting again,

I can't say whether your lymph nodes are reactive or not but as nurse Naomi has said if they have been there a while that may well be the case.  If you notice any changes in the size then do get back in touch with your GP so they can assess them.

It is really only your GP that can make that assessment. Even though it is comforting hearing what other members of the forum have to say do remember that everyone's situation is very different and it is difficult to compare one person with another.

Try not to overthink it all.

    Take Care,

    Catherine
