Hair issues

Good morning,

I am a 38 year old female and in recovery from AML. I lost my head hair and some bodily hair during my treatment. My head hair is growing back slowly however my other bodily hair seems to be growing back quicker and especially on my face so I am conscious of the fact I'm getting a moustache and I've got downy hair. I was considering using a No No to get rid of it but would appreciate your help and advise on what I can do especially as my skin is still slightly sensitive. Thank you.

  • Hi MimiBeth, thanks so much for getting in touch.

It is good to hear you are in recovery.

The regrowth of hair after treatment is different for everyone, but people often find they develop downy hair on their face after treatment has finished.  It can also be a side effect of steroids that you may have taken. This hair can be the initial regrowth and may not last long.

If your skin is still sensitive it may be worth waiting until this settles before doing anything with the hair, or getting some advice from a local beauty therapist who has experience working with people who have had cancer.  Your clinical nurse specialist should be able to talk this through with you too.

I hope this is helpful and please do get back to us, or give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040 if you want to talk about anything else.  The lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rachel
