Colonoscopy

I had a colonoscopy today , I opted for the gas and air as my friend whos had the procedure said was a little uncomfy but my god I was in terrible pain screaming when they got the camera up , they only managed to get the cam up 20 cm and had to stop , they said they couldnt offer sedation as id still feel the pain . They are giving me a CT scan but im now worried sick . Why is it so painful for some and others not ?

  • Hi Lennie ,

I had a Colonoscopy on 12th June. I had fentanyl and midazolam as a painkiller/anaesthetic. I was having 7/10 pain in abdomen and anus on standard pain killers without a hose shoved up there so asked for the max dose!!

I don't know why it's more painful for some.

I hope your CT scan results come back clear.

    Take Care.

  • Hello Lennie and thanks for posting,

Some people definitely do find colonoscopies very painful and they can't  tolerate them so you are not alone, this is an established fact. I am not sure exactly why it is a more painful procedure for some than others, it could be to do with the way the bowel loops inside of us - our bodies are all slightly different so that might be a factor.

After a procedure can't be completed, I think people often feel they are at fault in some way when they aren't and it can leave them feeling upset. I hope you don't feel this way but if you do, try not to dwell on it too much. It is just one of those things that you have no control over.

Waiting for tests is inevitably worrying. I hope you find out about your CT scan soon.
