CA-125 above high reference limit

Hi

I had a blood test on 20th June and have logged in to the NHS app to see the result is abnormal/above high reference limit with a result of 70.

Of course, I am absolutely terrified as many people in my family have cancer.

I cannot get an appointment with the nurse until 13th July. I already had a pelvis scan booked for 19th July to investigate gynaecological issues.

I was wondering if there are any other things that could cause this level such as fibroids which I have had in the past?

Should I just wait for the outcome of these two appointments or should I be pushing for a sooner appointment?

  • Hello and thank you for contacting us.

The CA 125 blood test can be raised for a number of reasons. Anything that causes inflammation or irritation in the pelvic area, like fibroids or cysts can raise this level, not just cancer.

Maybe you could ring the radiology department and say you are happy to take last minute cancellations.

When cancer is in the family, people often assume that this greatly increases their risk of developing it, but this isn't necessarily so. Although the genes we inherit may influence our risk, this may not be by very much. No one is risk free and the risk of cancer increases for all of us as we get older. This is quite a complicated topic and it might be useful to look at our section explaining genes and inherited cancer risk here.

Take care, and hopefully you will know more about what is going on soon.

    Sarah.

  • Hi. My recent blood level was also 70. I've had an ultrasound followed by a CTscan recently and just got a call from my GP yesterday. I have a lot of swelling in my uterus and it might be a fibroid. I'm being referred to gynae to investigate more. I fully understand how you are anxious though, but the time has actually flown by. Once you have had scan, you should get results within a few days. Hope all goes well for you
