Biopsy wait times

Hi all
My mother had a CT guided biopsy taken as they found a soft tissue mass attached to her spine. We were told up to 3 weeks for the results and then on the 3rd week we were told it had to be sent to another test site as it is very rare and this could take another 3 weeks. We are now in the 5th week of waiting. Is this normal please? Thank you X

  • Hello there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear your mother is currently undergoing tests and appreciate the long wait in getting results must be unsettling.

It isn't unusual for complicated biopsy results to be sent to a specialist lab for a second opinion in certain circumstances.

Waiting is difficult enough when you don't know what is going on but hopefully your mother will hear something soon about what this is and what needs to happen next.

Keeping yourself busy and your mind on other things can be helpful at times like this but it seems you are almost there now so hang in there.

Do get back in touch if needed but I hope you hear something soon.

All the best to you and your mother

    Naomi

  • Thank you for your reply.

My mother has been diagnosed with Cancer they just do not know which type it is so have requestedTruSight RNA Cancer Panel’ which looks at the cancers down to gene level (whatever this mean)

It is complressing the nerves in her spine and very painful. They have stopped the Tramodol and given her Morphine. Its been nearly 8 weeks and still not a diagnosis.

  • Hello Sharon and thanks for getting back to us.

Gene panel tests are looking for genetic signatures in the cancer usually to find out if there are any that could be used to guide treatment decisions. This sort of approach is called personalised medicine.  You can read more about it on our website.  But it may be that in your mother's case, the information this test will provide is needed to complete the picture and help the doctors pin down what sort of cancer she has.

All I can suggest is that you chase this up again with the hospital , it must be very frustrating for you both.

I hope your mother is more comfortable as a result of changing pain killers.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
