Advice about Transvaginal Ultrasound experience

Hi everyone,

Im 25 and I've been experiencing abdominal pain for about 5 weeks now. After about 2 weeks my symptoms worsened and I was experiencing back ache / needing a wee constantly / bloating. I went to the doctors and had a number of swabs / an internal examination. She ruled out pregnancy and urine infections. She referred me to have an ultrasound which took place today! I've had one before (about 1 year ago) and they discussed the results with me as the ultrasound was happening and told me that everything looked normal.

Todays experience was a lot different and it's got me worried  It was at a physio clinic (and not a doctors surgery like last time) but the woman said she wouldn't discuss my results with me and that I needed to call my doctor to get the results next week. She also said two comments when doing the internal part of the ultrasound to the other lady in the room who typed it up (one was a number like 'right 82' and then she said something like 'right endo  325'). She wouldn't even give me an indication on the outcome of the results or anything! Is this normal? Even if there's nothing wrong? I've already had 5 weeks of sleepless nights and another week waiting for results it's not what I had on the cards. I expected them to at least give me some indication today :-(

  • Sorry - just realised this was in Ask the Nurses. Will reply to your other post.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

An ultrasound (U/S) is often carried out by a health professional called a sonographer, who is not a doctor and will not give the results of the scan. However, some may choose to give some information.  If they don't do this it does not mean they are looking at anything worrying. Sometimes it is a doctor that does the the scan, so during this you may find you get a bit more information.

All scan results are reported by a specialist doctor called a radiologist. These reports are then sent to the doctor that wanted you to have it done, you will then be the results.

I am afraid I have no idea what the scan technical language you heard means and to be honest I would not be concerned about it.

Please try not to worry too much. Some people find keeping busy helps keep their mind off things that cause concern.

    Take care,

    Caroline
