Lump on shin

Hi

my 6 year old has developed a lump on her shin. We had an X-ray which showed nothing wrong with the bone so have been referred for an mri. I'm going crazy with worry as Googling brings up all sorts. It looks like a like a lump but when touched feels more just like a swelling, it's slightly squishy but I can't feel a ball shape or anything. It's tender when pressed on. Have you seen anything similar in children and any signs it's nothing serious? It's not red at all and she well on herself

  • Hello Katie and thanks for posting,

I can understand you asking, but unfortunately we aren't in a position to be able to shed any light on what is causing your daughter's lump. I can appreciate that inevitably this is worrying you, I think most parents would feel much the same until they knew the score.

Googling usually makes people fret more, as it seldom provides any answers and can keep the worry front of mind, so we generally advise against it and instead suggest deliberately trying to distract yourself.

Bear in mind that lumps are common and cancer in children is rare.

I hope you find out more soon, until you do, try to do keep an open mind.

    All the best,

    Julia

  • Hi, I wondered how everything went as my daughter has a squishy lump too xx

  • Hello Lizzie67 and thanks for your post.

I have done a quick reply as it has been a year since the last post on this thread, and I'm not sure who will see your post to reply.

If you do have any concerns about your daughter's leg,  do make an appointment with her GP and they will be able to take a look and refer her for any tests if necessary.

    take care

    All the best

    Jemma
