Nail Biopsy so scared!

Hello everyone I'm about to have a nail biopsy on Thursday, Apart from a bad result I'm so scared about the pain afterwards when anaesthetic come off. I have a very low tolerance when it comes to pain. After reading stories of how extremely painful it is even in small toenail makes me want to backout because mine is on my big toenail, if small toeanil is already extremely  painful  how much more for a big toenail? Thinking about the pain is really terrifying me, I can't sleep and think properly anymore, I was even crying while telling my husband how scared I am. Please to anyone who had nail biopsy please share your experience. Does pain killers help with the pain? How long does it take for the pain to go away.

  • Hello Mariandy and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry you are going through this stressful time while waiting for a nail biopsy, but I am not sure if other peoples experiences will help. Do remember pain is a very individual thing so someone else's story could cause you more concerns. When you arrive at your appointment please let them know how worried you are about pain afterwards and that you are very scared about how things might be afterwards. They will advise what painkillers to take and when to take them, maybe even write it down so you feel you have some control over it.

Other than that do try and keep your mind occupied between now and your appointment on Thursday to distract yourself. This will be the only way to help the time pass quicker. It might also be good to have some nice things lined up to do in the days following the procedure so you have something else to focus on and distract you if you are feeling discomfort.

Take care, and I hope all gets sorted for you on Thursday.

    Sarah.

  • Hello!!

i have just had my third nail biopsy (ring finger) as my results kept returning inconclusive! Once the anaesthetic is in you won't feel and thing and the nurses are amazing at helping you too feel relaxed (I have serious anxiety in hospitals). The anaesthetic wears off pretty quickly and it's like a throbbing sensation. Take paracetamol to the hospital with you so that you can take one straight after your precedure. I never needed more than paracetamol to help with the pain and aslong as you keep on top of it you should be okay. It's is easily manageable with paracetamol although I understand people manage pain differently. You notice when it wears off so just have some more. The pain for me only last about 3/4 days, and then after that it just hurt if you knocked it (obviously).

    hope this helps xx
