CA125 Results and High White Blood Cell Count

Hello, my mum died of ovarian cancer in 2005 when she was 50 and I was 18. I've been feeling bloated and full and had a blood test which came back with a CA125 of 31 which I understand is within the norm but I've been referred for an ultrasound scan. My white blood cell count is high (11.3), as is my Neutrophilia count (8.9) - is there a correlation with ovarian cancer and high white blood cell count and a high Neutrophilia count?

  • Hello and thanks for posting again

I am sorry to hear you lost your mum to ovarian cancer so young and appreciate how this is causing you worry in your own situation.

Symptoms can be caused by so many different things and most won't be the result of cancer.

Whilst ca125 when raised can be a sign of ovarian cancer, other inflammatory conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis and ovarian cysts can cause these levels to be raised.

Likewise a slightly raised white blood or neutrophil count may also suggest that the body is or has recently been fighting off an infection of some kind, so it is important not to go jumping to any conclusions too soon.

It seems the doctor is being sensible sending you off for an pelvic ultrasound where they can look at all the female organs to see if anything obvious may be causing your symptoms and to see if anything needs monitoring or treating.

Ovarian cysts are common and often harmless and can resolve by themselves most of the time but sometimes if they are large and start causing problems may need to be removed.

No one here can say what the matter is I'm afraid but try not to over think things until you have had the ultrasound and know more.

People say that keeping busy and their thoughts and mind on other things can help at times like this.

I hope you know more soon

    Take care

    Naomi
