CA125 Results

Hello. This is my first time posting. I lost my mum when I was 18 to ovarian cancer. Mum was 50 when she died. I’ve been having bloating and feeling full. I had full bloods. My CA 125 level came back as 31 ku/L which is close to the top ‘normal level’ of <35 so I’m seeking advice if I should ask for/insist on an ultrasound given my mums history.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry your mum died from ovarian cancer. This must have been a very difficult time for you.

The CA125 is a protein that circulates in the bloodstream, and can sometimes be a marker for ovarian cancer. Women with ovarian cancer tend to have higher levels of CA125 in their blood then women who don't. But CA125 can also be raised for other gynaecological reasons that are not related to cancer, which includes endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and pelvic inflammatory disease, or heavy bleeding and fibroids. But your CA125 level is within normal limits.

It sounds as if your GP has taken your symptoms seriously as he referred you for blood tests which came back normal. There could be a number of different reasons for your symptoms, so your doctor may consider doing further tests over time if needed. It's often a process of elimination to find out the cause of someone's symptoms.
