asbestos in artex/lymphoma

Moved in a new house in early December 2009 I moved into the back bedroom and looked at the ceiling which i could clearly see had colllapsed in two different places and been repaired prior to our moving in. I decided i would have to scrub the whole ceiling as the paint job was very poor, the artex seemed a yellowish colour like a smokers ceiling, I used a small platform as i am a Bricklayer and had the platform so i put it to a hieght of about three feet from ceiling i then scrubed it by hand lying directly beneath it it at scrubbed hard until the ceiling seemed clean, i then painted the ceiling was not as good as i would of liked it but it looked better. Iput in knew carpets and new bed and began sleeping there.I seemed to feel ill immediatly but i thought it was just me not the room but by febuary i felt so ill and the pea sized lumps popped out on my neck, which turned out to be lymph nods i also began swelling up and was admitted to hospital where i was diagnosed  whith Non-Hodgkins Follicular lymphoma, severe allergic reactions which led to Anaphalactic shock emergency treatment around the same time as well as a severe Rheumatoid Arthritis i was diagnosed with lymphoma on 26th March 2010 i am wondering now could the artex asbestos have anything to do with it or am i way off base with this. any help in knowing would be appreciated thank you

  • I could be waaaaaaaaaaay off here, but doesn't asbestos take years, even decades, to do its damage? Again, I'm no expert, but I've not heard of anyone get cancers within weeks from such a scenario you have put forth.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your past diagnosis and treatment for NHL and hope you are doing well now.

Asbestos exposure usually only causes problems when people have worked with it through their job and inhaled the fibres over many years without adequate protection. It can then cause cancers such as mesothelioma and lung cancer many years often decades later.

It is probably just a very unfortunate coincidence that you were diagnosed with cancer a short while after.

I hope this is helpful but do get back if you have more questions.

    All the best

    Naomi
