Borderline or low grade

Silly question probably but is borderline changes the same as low grade changes ? I've had my smear results back after 12 months of having a low grade result. I've noticed this time my result is borderline changes and not low grade and wanted to know the difference if there was any. Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is not a silly question at all!  Borderline changes indicate slight abnormality. The cells are very close to being normal. These cells may go away on their own.

Low grade changes (dyskaryosis) indicate that you have abnormal cells in your cervix. These are not cancer and for cancer to develop could take many years. The charity Jo's Trust has some more information on their website about your screening results which you can see here

The changes in the cells are caused by the HPV virus (Human Papilloma Virus)

Sometimes it can take at least a couple of years for your body to clear the virus and sometimes a bit longer. It is a very common virus so you are not alone. 8 out of 10 people will be exposed to this virus at sometime in their life.

    I hope this helps.
