Mum's Got Liver Cancer

My poor 84 year old mum has just been diagnosed with liver cancer.  She has non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as well.  Saw her consultant today who said that either surgery or catheter to "choke" the tumour are the options.  I'm really worried given her age.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Hello elliemay04 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your mum and can appreciate that the prospect of any treatment can seem daunting. Rather than age, consultants consider a patient's fitness level to decide about treatment and they would weigh up the risk of a treatment causing harm with the possible benefit. Unfortunately, I don't think treatment can be completely risk free, but the risks are likely to be low and are balanced with the likely benefit.

If you haven't seen it already, we have some information about treating liver cancer on our website at this link .

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here from 9-5 weekdays.
